Alternative Therapies

Alternative therapies are where you turn when conventional medicine is either ineffective, won't listen, has no answers or has failed miserably (actually made things worse).

Take a Pill
Oh yes! There are millions of "quick cure" "take this pill" quacks and outright scams out there and they are more than willing to take your money. You end up stuck in the "what can I believe" limbo land because modern medicine is so regulated and ruled by pharmaceuticals, insurance companies and special interest groups that you have lost faith, and the alternative or complimentary field is so un-regulated that you just plain don't know who to trust. I know how you feel.

My Experience
Modern medicine told us there was nothing wrong with our daughter, that it was our fault and turned us in to child protective services with accusations of abuse under Munchausen by proxy. The case was dismissed, of course, and we were able to get valid diagnosis through community mental health and a local university - she has autism spectrum disorder and bipolar disorder.

It took us 12 years.

It is no wonder that people turn to alternative therapies and complementary or natural medicine. But how can you tell the difference between a well-played scam and something that can really help?

My Advice
My advice on alternative therapies and "out-of-the-box" approaches is this: do not jump into ANYTHING right away without doing the proper research yourself and discussing the treatment with a physician you can trust. I don't care who says it works - check it out for yourself and get as much data and professional opinions on it as you can.

Do not let emotion push you into something without properly investigating it first. I know that overwhelming need to do something, but be sure you check it our for yourself before giving something to your child.

Alternative Therapies and Complementary and Natural Medicine
Now, with all that in mind, and the determination to check everything out for yourself, just what are some alternative therapies and complementary and natural approaches out there?

I've listed below some of the alternative therapies that I have either had recommended to me, or that I have heard good things about. This does not mean you can avoid doing the research and asking questions on your own, but are here to give you someplace to get started with your own investigations.

Always check with a doctor before giving any substance to your child, no matter how natural it is. Many plants and herbs can react with medications and treatments, so please check it out before just giving something to your child.

Every child is different, so just remember that the "miracle" that Aunt Gertrude swears by could have little or even the exact opposite effect on your child. Check with a trusted professional before you give anything to your child.
