Raising Special Kids is Changing to My Special Kids

Raising Special Kids site is coming down soon - by the end of the month, but don't worry, I am putting together a brand new site from Raising Special Kids - and because that brand is already in use by www.raisingspecialkids.org, I am changing my site to www.my-special-kids.com. I will have the index page up and will rewrite and post the pages as I go along, updating and adding new information and experiences. Stay tuned!

Learn See Do

Our family project for January is a learn see do board where we are posting each night in January something that we would like to learn, to go see or do together as a family or for a homeschool activity during the year 2009.

Family Activity Board

This is our family activity board that we will use to plan our homeschool and family adventures, outings and activities for the new year. In November, we did our Thankful Tree (See it here), which really was a great success and we wanted to do something in December as well, but too many things happened all at once, not the least of which, my father had his second stroke. So, January it is!

Learning to Think

We really wanted to design a way for our family to do something together that would get the kids to think. I know that seems almost like a dirty word these days, and just the thought of it makes my head hurt (OK – couldn’t resist) but we want our children to learn critical thinking skills, planning and goal setting, brainstorming, and just plain using the old noodle (or noggin as on TV!) And this is a way for us to do it all together. From this concept the Learn See Do board was born.

Learn

This could be anything you are interested in learning about, or how to do something. The example we gave is Anielei has wanted to learn her lower case letters, and Aja just plain wants to learn the alphabet!  It could be anything from learning how to swim to learning how the reduction in privatization toward the socialization of medicine impacts freedom of choice for Americans.

See

Where would you like to go and what would you like to see? So far we’ve got Binder Park Zoo, the Farmers Market, Beach, children’s museum and The Teddy Bear Factory. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it, and you know, learning should be fun! Ideas can be fun, educational, or even whimsical. It doesn’t have to even be practical. The point of Learn See Do is to get the family together each day to think and communicate. Secondary is being able to use the ideas as a framework to plan activities for the year. These are the bonds that hold families together and teach our kids the importance of being and doing things together, as well as communication and sharing.

Do

What do you want to do? What activities can we do together as a family? What are you interested in doing or learning how to do? The action portion of the exercise, but it is very easy to combine all three in this one category. We constructed our board as an open frame (like a school bulletin board) without making any separation between the Learn, See, or Do because there can be and we are encouraging overlap. Personally, I think that when families do things together and go places together that everyone learns something every time.

Family Project

This is our “board” project for January. The kids really enjoy it and ask about it every night. We do this just before bedtime, so the last a of the day is done together as a family. I am very interested in your input on this one, so please send me your feedback.
