Special Kids is Changing to My Special Kids
Raising Special Kids site is coming down soon - by the end of the month, but don't worry, I am putting together a brand new site from Raising Special Kids - and because that brand is already in use by www.raisingspecialkids.org, I am changing my site to www.my-special-kids.com. Well, it goes something like this: So, there I was in Phoenix, Arizona, minding my own business and working as a Technical Analyst making a decent living when BAM! it all changed. Well, not exactly, but sometimes it seems that way. I met Jennifer, who is now my wife, and she had
just one
daughter, Cosette. That
was when I was introduced to the mental health "system of care" and my
story begins.
I didn't have a clue!We went to meetings and trainings and although I could understand the individual concepts, I just could not figure out how it all went together. And we could not figure out a way to really help Cosette. By the time she started the 5th grade, she absolutely refused to go back to school. Oh yes, and that is how I was introduced to home-schooling! We now have 3 girls attending the "Greenman Homeschool Academy", but at the time, we did not know where to start. (Personally, I refer to it as the "Greenman Homeschool Academy for Wayward Girls" but not everyone agrees with me, but this is my story and I'm sticking to it)  The MoveWe got this idea that we should move back closer to our families, which is a great idea, and I am so happy our kids get to know their grandparents and that we are closer to be able to visit. However, I wasn't prepared to handle the "no visible means of support" economy in southwest Michigan and for the first time I had to worry about not just finding a good tech job, but finding a job at all. It is pretty bad when even the local pizza delivery joints won't call you back.So I took a security job at night "guarding the farm". Literally. And it was actually a pleasant enough job, however, there were no affordable health benefits, and um, no future either. I knew I couldn't work there forever, so I started taking classes online through Western Governors University (yes, a shameless plug) which allowed me to work at my own pace and because the credits are "competence based" instead of classroom hours based, I really believe in the program of study because I know I really earned those credits!
What am I studying?Why Information Technology, of course. I have an AAS degree, but now I am working on my BS degree, which I hope will allow me to break back into the tech field. That was the plan! My Story goes on! Well, two babies can really change the way you look at things, and two babies with special needs really changes things! I needed a job with health care benefits that we could actually afford. Now, don't get me wrong here. I had not been
sitting
on my, well you know, and hoping a good job offer would come a calling.
I had quite a few interviews for jobs out to about a 60 mile radius. I
had plenty of job offers outside of that radius, but the commute would
have killed me. Anyway, the job interviews went well, but the offers -
I could just not afford to work there! Mostly because of the health
insurance coverage - or lack thereof, but I digress.
This is the part of my story where I really start learning and getting into the things that ended up with this website. We had slowly become more involved with the Kalamazoo system of care since we had moved here, and about this time, a job opened for a Family Support Partner at the non-profit parent information and support center for the community. They offered the best health care benefits we had seen in years, so I took the job. And THAT is when I found out how much I really DIDN'T know! I learned as I went along, and what I didn't know I had access to resources where I could find out. Eventually, people began to seek me out for answers and as for myself - I knew I could at least ask the right questions! Site Build It (SBI)What does SBI have to do with my story? I am glad you asked that question. My Story, our dream, our family dream, is to just load up and travel all over the USA. A rolling Greenman Homeschool Academy! But working for a non-profit will not a rich man make. In fact, if it weren't for a little extra on the student loans to pay for my college, we would have been homeless years ago!The first thing I was looking for was a way to help pay for life. You know those "bill" thingies that come every month and stuff like "rent" that people expect you pay. Go figure. And OMG food! The food our family has to eat does not come off the shelf at a Walmart Superstore! Before I can even think about any kind of dream, I needed a way to make the ends meet. I have been researching ways to earn a little extra money online for - OK - years. I've tried quite a few things and could not find a way to make it work. But over and over there was a recommendation to get something called SBI. Yeah, yeah. I checked it out and it seemed a little expensive, so I put it off.
