The one thing I have had the most difficulty with
over the
years that I have been “in the system” is to find out
exactly what
services and resources are available and how to get them. You would
think that working with one of the community agencies, especially
through the Community Mental Health services for that they should be
able to tell you what is available for you in your area – but
they
don't always.
What
Do They Know?
Now, don’t get me wrong. They are not keeping
information from you (that is a WHOLE ‘nother story!) it is
usually
they simply do not know. Well, they may know a few things, and someone
else knows about something else and so on. You get the idea. It
literally takes years to get a good list put together of the resources
available locally for your special needs child, and that is, and will
always be a work in progress.
Out
of Luck?
Are you just plain out of luck? No, of course not,
but knowing the reality of the situation and what you can do about it
is your first step toward mastery. Obviously, I cannot provide a list
of family resources and special needs services for your local area
– I
do not even know where YOU live! And it wouldn’t do you any good
to
list the special needs resources that I have found for my local area,
now would it?
Where
to Find Special Needs Resources
What I can do here is list the various categories
and types of services, agencies and supports that are out there and how
you can find out if it is available in your area. You will have to put
together your own local resource list, but knowing what to look for and
how to go about trying to find it is definitely something I wish I
would have had - years and years ago!
Here is where you can get started:
