Information on Special Needs Tricycles

I first learned about special needs tricycles from my daughter’s OT (Occupational Therapist). They used one there with her to help strengthen her legs, core and upper body, as well as heavy work for sensory integration. But before that, a tricycle is a tricycle, right?

Not exactly. The best way to explain is to see it for yourself.

Here are some of the different types of AmTrykes that are available.

Both physical and occupational therapists make use of the AmTryke tricycle's many therapeutic benefits, citing improved motor skills, strength development and self-esteem. These tricycles, which can be hand and/or foot operated, are designed for riders of all ages, sizes, and different kinds of special needs. There is an AmTryke for your child!

They are also very expensive, which, if you are Bill Gates, is no problem, but for most of us a little help is needed. We got our AmTryke through Ambucs. AmTryke is actually owned and operated by Ambucs, a national non-profit organization. They provide a way to collect and advertise for donations that pays for the AmTryke. It only took a few weeks for my daughter to get hers, so it does work very well.

Bicycles for special needs, trikes, or tricycles is something every kid should have, but it can be difficult to accommodate some special needs with just a bike from the local bicycle shop. The AmTryke is a special needs tricycle that is available in all sorts of sizes and styles, and can be adapted for a variety of needs.

Here comes Aja riding her AmTryke

The AmTryke is not only fun to ride, but is also one of the primary reasons why our daughter, Aja, does not have to wear leg braces now. You do need a recommendation from your child’s OT (Occupational Therapist) in order to get an AmTryke through Ambucs, but it is definitely worth talking about it with your OT.Ambucs is a national organization, but has local chapters in most cities.
