Raising Special Kids is Changing to My Special Kids

Raising Special Kids site is coming down soon - by the end of the month, but don't worry, I am putting together a brand new site from Raising Special Kids - and because that brand is already in use by www.raisingspecialkids.org, I am changing my site to www.my-special-kids.com. I will have the index page up and will rewrite and post the pages as I go along, updating and adding new information and experiences. Stay tuned!

Types of Therapy

and Alternatives

Main Types of Therapy

What are the types of therapy and the alternatives that are out there for your special needs children? Well, there is a bunch of them out there, but here you can find out a little more about what is out there.

There are 4 main types:

  1. Occupational Therapies (OT)
  2. Physical Therapies (PT)
  3. Everything Else or Specialized Therapies (SP)
  4. Alternative Therapies (AT)

What are we talking about here? These are the actual therapeutic programs or activities that your child is participating in for the purpose of compensating or overcoming a portion of their challenges.

OT or Occupational Therapies is the "use of productive or creative activity in the treatment or rehabilitation of physically, cognitively, or emotionally disabled people" (American Heritage Dictionary) and gives people the "skills for the job of living" necessary for "living life to its fullest.

PT or Physical Therapy is used to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the lifespan.

Everything Else, SP or Specialized Therapies include programs like ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), Animal Assisted Therapies, Behavior modification, Dolphin therapies, functional behavior analysis, judo, play therapies, positive behavior supports, sensory diet, social skills, speech, art, yoga, horseback riding, equestrian, and tricycles and bicycles

AT or Alternative Therapies are usually those that have not been fully accepted by the mainstream medical doctors, but have had some success in some circumstances. These are things like special diets, elimination diets, supplements, classical homeopathy, acupuncture, acupressure, and even chiropractic.
